Local Portlanders On the Stairs play the TWT. Project founder Nate Clark and saw player Brendan Phillips played a set of tunes off the new album Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt. Great songs and lots of insight into their musical vision. Coming Soon!

I just got done listening to the story of how Don Hewitt ran the news show 60 minutes for over 40 years. When journalists would ask Don what the secret of his success was, Don would reply: “tell me a story”.

Many times with media, the script comes second to production. But not at TWT! The production must support the story. This is not to say that listening to a well recorded track is not nicer than listening to a track which has been poorly recorded. But I would gladly listen to a great song which has been badly recorded over the opposite any day. If you turned on the radio could you find me a song that started with an idea, a story, and built from there? Maybe on the oldies station, if they were not busy playing “Smoke On the Water” for the billionth time. I would bet that every time Mcdonalds serves a hamburger, Smoke On the Water is played somewhere. This is why TWT seeks new artists who have something to say. I know they are out there, I find them often, hiding out on myspace and other places where songwriters can post their work. Currently, these places are clamping down on access now as well, and we continually have to dig deeper to find the good stories.

With so much drama in the LBC it’s kind hard being TWT!

Ok, quick post to inform those who might be curious. Had a meeting with TWT web master BHolm and we had a great chat about what TWT really is all about.

So, I explained to him how so much of today’s music is about sound and not really about the song. Much like many movies released these days are about the picture quality and the effects and do not bring forth a strong plot. TWT is all about the plot! We aim to bring straight forward performances of what the artist are capable of in reguards to thier writing. While many times Americana and acoustic music is what we find TWT is not genre specific. We simply are looking for songwriters and bands with something to say. I will continue to post more about this later

Train Whistle Test is a Portland OR  podcast featuring great songwriters based in the Americana craft of painting lyrical and harmonic pictures. We aim to bring you the best songwriters we can find, as often as we can find them. TWT brings you songs in the purest of form boiled down to the manner in which showcases the tune best. So, you will find most of our guests play acoustic instruments. This approach allows for introspective listening and allows it to generate discussion about topics that come to mind. This discussion is generally published along with the performances. Since great songs do not happen on a set schedule either do we, but generally we broadcast at least once a month. So hit the subscription button, sit back and enjoy!
